Aloha Kahuku Elementary School ‘Ohana,
As I am in my third year serving as Po'okumu of Kahuku Elementary School, I want to express my deep gratitude for this community, our students, staff, and partners, and for the shared work we have done together over the past two years. It has been an honor to learn alongside you and to grow together in the work for all our students.
My approach to learning and teaching at KES is anchored in five key components:
Student Engagement
I prioritize creating an environment where all students feel curious, connected, and inspired to learn. Strong relationships and effective instructional practices remain at the heart of our school culture.
Purposeful Learning
Instruction at KES is intentional and meaningful, with clear learning intentions and success criteria aligned to priority standards. Learning experiences focus on the skills and knowledge students need to thrive in the classroom, in our community, and in the world.
Standards-Based
The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) continue to serve as our reference point for high-quality learning and academic growth, while also supporting students' social and emotional development. Learning intentions and success criteria guide both instruction and learning.
Learning Experiences
I emphasize a variety of teaching and learning approaches to ensure all students have access to engaging, inclusive, and meaningful learning experiences that honor diverse strengths, cultures, and ways of learning.
Data-Informed Decision Making
I use data thoughtfully to monitor student growth, inform instruction, and guide interventions and resources. Data helps us understand where students are, what they need now, where they need to go, and how best to support them, academically, behaviorally, and social-emotionally.
As I continue this work, I remain committed to a school culture rooted in high expectations, collaboration, safety, and continuous improvement.
Mahalo piha for your continued trust, partnership, and dedication to our haumana and our school community. I look forward to what we will continue to build together.
Me ka ha'aha'a,
Po'okumu Ikaika
